Microcement is a hand-trowelled, cement-based finish applied in several thin coats — only 2–3 mm thick in total — over a properly prepared surface. It bonds to tiles, concrete, render, or plasterboard, and because it's laid by hand rather than in sheets or slabs, it forms one continuous, joint-free surface that can run unbroken from floor to wall to benchtop.

How we install microcement properly.

Most of the microcement failures you read about online come from skipped steps, not from the material itself. Here's exactly how we install it — the substrate-first process a Sydney wet area needs, and that any good installer should follow.

    Substrate assessment

    An on-site inspection of your existing tiles, screed, or sheeting — adhesion checks, a moisture read, and a level survey. You get an honest go / no-go call before you commit a cent.

  2. 02

    Surface preparation + repair

    We prepare the substrate for a lasting bond — treating cracks, levelling, and making good any movement or hollow spots flagged at the assessment. Microcement is only ever as good as the surface beneath it.

  3. 03

    Primer + reinforcement mesh

    A bonding primer matched to your substrate, then a fibreglass reinforcement mesh embedded in the first coat — the layer that manages hairline movement and keeps the finish intact.

  4. 04

    Two to three hand-trowelled microcement coats

How durable is a microcement bathroom — really?
Properly installed and sealed, a microcement bathroom is built for 10+ years of everyday residential use with only light maintenance — its abrasion resistance is comparable to a high-grade timber floor. Honestly, it isn't as hard as ceramic tile, so it's a finish you look after rather than one you can ignore.
Will it crack?
Hairline cracking is the most common way microcement is let down, and it almost always traces back to the substrate, not the material. We manage it two ways: a fibreglass reinforcement mesh embedded in the build-up, and assessing the substrate for movement before we start — if a floor is going to move, we deal with it first, or we tell you it isn't a candidate.
How do I clean and maintain it?
Day to day, a soft cloth or microfibre mop and a pH-neutral cleaner is all it needs — there's no grout to scrub. Avoid acidic or abrasive cleaners, and plan on a light re-seal roughly every 5–7 years to keep the wet-area protection fresh.
Is it slip-resistant in a shower?
Yes — the sealer system can be specified to the slip-resistance class appropriate for a wet area or shower floor. There's a trade-off between a higher sheen and a higher slip rating, and we'll talk you through it at the site assessment so the finish suits how the room is actually used.
Is microcement suitable for showers and wet areas?
Yes — once sealed, the finished surface is non-porous and totally impermeable, so it suits showers, splashbacks, and full wet rooms. The one condition is a sound, properly prepared substrate, which we check before we quote.
Can microcement really go over existing tiles?
Yes, on a sound substrate — and it's one of the main reasons people choose it. We test adhesion and movement before quoting; not every tiled floor is a candidate, but most properly-laid bathrooms are. Going over the tiles avoids the demolition cost, the skip bin, and a fortnight of disruption.
What warranty do you provide?
